In late August, I had the chance to document my first same-sex wedding in Tuscany. The grooms, Chris and Ryan, chose to celebrate their special day at Villa Vignamaggio, a Renaissance villa in the heart of the Chianti region. Here, cypress trees, streams, and Italian gardens nestle within the woods, creating a fairytale landscape. The warm ambiance, the hillside’s hues after a storm, and the love from their family and friends made for a heartfelt day. Legend has it, Lisa Gherardini, famously painted by Leonardo da Vinci as the Mona Lisa, once resided here. Once a cultural and artistic hub, it is now an experience to be lived and shared. This is true, authentic Tuscany.
Chris and Ryan, a charming couple from NYC, are some of the most delightful people I’ve met this year. They are elegant, sophisticated, humorous, and hospitable. The wedding day began with a bit of a storm, but as the ceremony commenced, the sun made a timely return. The ceremony was deeply poignant and their cherished guests were moved by their love. The celebrations carried on into the night with dancing and merriment. Documenting my first same-sex wedding in Tuscany was truly an unparalleled experience.
Following the ceremony, the celebration really kicked into high gear. The villa, bathed in the soft glow of the setting Tuscan sun, echoed with laughter, joy, and the clinking of glasses. The air was alive with the strains of music, the rhythm enticing everyone onto the dance floor. Chris and Ryan, their faces glowing with happiness, led the dance, their movements a beautiful testament to their love. As the night deepened, the festivities showed no sign of slowing down. Friends and family, old and young, danced and laughed, creating memories that would last a lifetime. The food was exquisite, a culinary journey through traditional Tuscan cuisine, paired with the finest local wines. The atmosphere was one of pure joy, a celebration of love in its most authentic form.
As I packed up my equipment, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of gratitude. Being able to document Chris and Ryan’s wedding, to capture the love and joy that filled the air, was an honor. This was not just my first same-sex wedding in Tuscany, but also a powerful reminder of the beauty of love in all its forms. This day, this experience, will forever hold a special place in my heart.
